Believe it or not, 40% of the world’s population are without a clean and safe place to go to the loo and every day 5000 children under the age of five die needlessly from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water.
When Skyline was commissioned to refurbish six toilet blocks for Flint High School, they made us aware of their fundraising intentions and toilet twinning was high on the list. There is an £8 return for every £1 spent on a water and sanitation programme through saved time, increased productivity and reduced health costs; we could not ignore returns like this for such a worthwhile cause.
Skyline made a donation for every loo refurbished, helping towards bringing safe, clean and hygienic sanitation to another family or community. Not only do the funds help a cause, they have also instilled a sense of pride with the pupils whom can now benefit from and appreciate the refurbished facilities they have available at the school.
We were delighted to help such a worthwhile cause and the Head Boy and Girl at Flint High School are planning further fund-raising events which we will fully support.
Toilet Twinning is a UK based charity which launched in 2009 and has since built more than 1,600 latrines in Burundi, providing safe loos for nearly 10,000 people.
