Believe it or not, 40% of the world’s population are without a clean and safe place to go to the loo and every day 5000 children under the age of five die needlessly from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water.

When Skyline was commissioned to refurbish six toilet blocks for Flint High School, they made us aware of their fundraising intentions and toilet twinning was high on the list. There is an £8 return for every £1 spent on a water and sanitation programme through saved time, increased productivity and reduced health costs; we could not ignore returns like this for such a worthwhile cause.

Skyline made a donation for every loo refurbished, helping towards bringing safe, clean and hygienic sanitation to another family or community. Not only do the funds help a cause, they have also instilled a sense of pride with the pupils whom can now benefit from and appreciate the refurbished facilities they have available at the school.

We were delighted to help such a worthwhile cause and the Head Boy and Girl at Flint High School are planning further fund-raising events which we will fully support.

Toilet Twinning is a UK based charity which launched in 2009 and has since built more than 1,600 latrines in Burundi, providing safe loos for nearly 10,000 people.

For further information on the charity visit www.toilettwinning.org

Client: The Mansion Group
Location: Nottingham
Timescale: 12 weeks
Project: Refurbishment of Student Accommodation

Phase one: Refurbishment of a five storey grade two listed building. The works included refurbishment and fit-out of 145 bedrooms, 30 bathrooms, 30 kitchens and common areas. Creation of a student common room and management suite, as well as substantial external façade restoration and conservation works.

Phase two: The conversion of a grade two listed two storey annex building into seven en-suite student apartments. A new internal steel frame was designed and installed to provide an additional floor level and façade restraint. New internal build and fit-out works were carried out as well as external alterations and restoration works to the building façade.

The project was secured through a competitive tender via the client’s appointed employer’s agent and procured under a Design and Build form of contract. Once Skyline had secured the project, elements of the scheme were value engineered to suit the client’s budgetary constraints, in particular the mechanical and electrical element of the works. The project was completed and handed over ahead of schedule and all within the financial budgets agreed.

Location – Bristol
Timescale – 10 weeks

The client acquired a building which was already used as student accommodation. A complete refurbishment to all
apartments and communal areas was required which would enhance their portfolio of high specification, first class
student accommodation.

During a very tight schedule Skyline refurbished 170 bedrooms, 40 kitchens, 40 bathrooms, 40 w/c/cloakrooms all
communal areas and supplied furniture.

The building comprised of four blocks with the work completed on a rolling programme. The site was located on a
busy dual carriageway with no area for waste removal or delivery vehicles so meticulous planning and liaison with
local authorities was a must.

The project was completed one week ahead of schedule and within budget.

Client – Keppie Massie
Contract value – £60,000
Timescale – 4 weeks

Secured through competitive tendering via Keppie Massie Surveyors, Skyline undertook the refurbishment of four toilets over four levels to a multi storey city centre office building.

The refurbishment works comprised of a complete strip out, new heating, lighting and re-plastering of walls. New ceilings, wall tiling, cubicles, vanity units, toilets and wash hand basins.

The works were programmed in a manner to ensure that we did not unduly inconvenience the building users and all major noisy and strip out works were completed outside normal office working hours.

The project was a success for all parties due to our considerable experience of working on toilet refurbishment, which entail much planning, many specialist trades, and consequently for some the level of work required can be unexpected!
